Treatments - Acupuncture

We are traditional Chinese Medical specialists and offer the full range of traditional Chinese medical therapies: Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Therapy, Chinese Massage, Moxibustion, Cupping and Gua Sha.

Acupuncture as practised by members of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is an holistic approach to health, based on over 2000 years of developments and refinements in the Far East.

Although often described as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall well being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms. Therefore, not only will the patient hope to experience improvements in their main presenting condition, but also an overall sense of improvement in general well being, eg energy, quality of sleep, clarity of thinking and , therefore, efficiency.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific locations on the body referred to as acupoints. By stimulating these acupoints, the therapist is able to stimulate the circulation of Qi, not only in the local area, but also in areas far away from the needle site on the same meridian and in the organs that the meridian connects to.

Recent research into the safety of acupuncture shows that it is one of the safest forms of medicine available today. Certainly, in comparison to western medicines, its safety is unparalleled. Single use disposable needles and strict codes of practise are used to guarantee patient safety.

Our activities are governed by the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM) which ensure the highest level of training and the continuing professional development of practitioners.

What does it feel like?

As the needle is inserted, often nothing much is felt at all. After the needle is in place it is carefully manipulated to cause a very important sensation called Deqi. This sensation is often described as a mild ache, warming sensation or some other strange sensation that surprisingly feels nothing like a needle. Sometimes the sensation can be felt moving along the respective meridian.

The training of a traditional acupuncturist typically consists of a three year full time degree.
